Brüno is out in theaters this weekend and is already stirring up controversy. The latest character and mock-umentary by Sacha Baron Cohen has sparked a debate over whether the homosexual stereotypes are hurting the gay community or helping by satirizing homophobia in America.
The rights organization GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) said the film reinforces negative stereotypes and “decreases the public’s comfort with gay people.” After seeing the movie, the group’s president acknowledged some of the skits were “well-intentioned,” but that some bits were “hurtful” and “damaging.” One particular scene hit close to home for the movement following the recent Proposition 8 decision in California against gay marriage.
Regardless of where you fall on the debate, the shock entertainment is already making money. The R-rated movie made $1.6 million from midnight shows alone and $14.2 million for Friday. It’s on track to become one of the top five R-rated comedy openings ever, just weeks after The Hangover raised the bar.
In recognition of the sensation, we’d like to take a look at six of Brüno’s outrageous premiere wear from around the world. Unfortunately, I know nothing about fashion. I have a closet full of green polos, I have on cargo pants with a hole in them, and I wear black socks to the gym. To help us out, we asked for the help of Umlaüt, a German fashionista and a bit of a professional rival of Brüno’s. We thought if anyone was going to tell it like it is, it’d be him. I’ll let Umlaüt take it from here:
Vassap girlfriends! My name is Umlaüt! Enough of ze intro! Let’s get right to eet, shall we?
Crank it uuuuuuuuuuup:
