Forget all the other summer special effects movies because there’s a new trailer for Sony’s District 9. The film is a subversive story about aliens forced to live in slum-like camps on Earth while being questioned by the government. They eventually recruit a human hero exposed to their biotechnology and rebel against our planet. Peter Jackson’s Wing Nut effects studio contributed to the production and the filmmaker is producing/presenting the movie. Neill Blomkamp directed this as his first full-length movie after the Halo game adaptation was canceled.
The footage and viral marketing so far have started to work the early fans into a frenzy. FilmJunk even made a list comparing it to Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. It looks just plain awesome and I can only hope it ends up being as good as it looks. The last time people seemed this excited about a trailer and a relatively unknown project it was Cloverfield, which I thought was excellent. Imagine that with less shaky cam….
Watch it below or on Yahoo! movies:
District 9 is out August 14, 2009. It’s rated R for “bloody violence and pervasive language.”
