‘Blade’ Prequel in the Works Without Blade

Published by Jeff Leins on: July 8th, 2009

Deacon FrostIn October 2008, Stephen Dorff mentioned something to the UK’s Sunday Mail about starring in a prequel to Blade and reprising his role as Deacon Frost, the power-hungry vampire leader.  The news sort of came and went at the time.  The website didn’t even bother to spell his name right in the headline.  Here is the actor in his own words, “It will be a prequel to the Blade movies, Deacon’s story. It’s a new trilogy the director has created.”

The director he referred to was Stephen Norrington, the man behind the camera for the original Blade starring Wesley Snipes as part human and part vampire.  Norrington told Comics2News he plans to return to the series after he’s done re-imagining The Crow.

He says it isn’t exactly how the Mail reported it, but Norrington credits Dorff in coming up with an idea that “has evolved into a very interesting story.”  Dorff didn’t return for the rest of the trilogy because his villain character was killed off and Norrington moved on to even lesser projects.  I doubt Snipes would be involved in any way, but perhaps a younger Blade might make an appearance.

The prequel is still in the story stages, so this is a long way from happening, but I wouldn’t be surprised if some Hollywood types jumped at the chance to make this.  Vampires are a major part of movies these days with The Twilight Saga: New Moon hitting theaters in a few months and at least two more of those on the way.  Plus Dorff is making a comeback by playing a part in Sofia Coppola’s Somewhere.
