Twilight Producers Hint at Possible Spin-Offs

Published by Jeff Leins on July 7, 2009

There’s no question that the Twilight series has become a phenomenon.  The Internet is littered with fan fiction, art, songs, and products all related to the creation of author Stephenie Meyer.  Robert Pattinson, who plays Edward, can’t even walk down the street without being mauled by screaming girls.

Which is why Summit Entertainment has to be considering options for continuing the franchise after Meyer’s four novel series is completely adapted for the screen.  After the first made $382 million worldwide, there’s just too much money to be made if the trend stays strong.

At a ceremony recognizing the producers with the “Film of Vision Award,” Wyck Godfrey, Greg Mooradian and Guy Oseary were questioned by RadarOnline about what happens next?  Where does Twilight go after all four are done?  What about a Volturi family spin-off?  Mooradian smiled and simply said, “all possibilities are out there.”  It will depend on the continued success in theaters and “where the audience demands it goes from there.”

Meyer began writing Midnight Sun, a re-telling of the events in Twilight from Edward’s perspective, but a fan leak caused her to re-think the book and the slightly different take.  Maybe she could be convinced (paid) to return to the story and complete it for the big screen.  Or maybe Summit will venture off without her, seeking her consent to take the characters in a new direction.  Would Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, or Taylor Lautner even be interested in more vampire stories after four?  Meanwhile, Meyer has started another unrelated series in the science fiction world and has profited from its growing popularity.

The Twilight Saga: New Moon wrapped production in May for a November release and The Twilight Saga: Eclipse starts shooting this August for a June 2010 opening.  The fourth and possible final adaptation, Breaking Dawn, is in the scripting stage.

Please do not try cheesy spin offs without Meyer's involvement. We all know that they would be disastrous and embarrassing. However, I would love for Meyer to write a book involving Renesmee and Jacob. That would def be worthwhile. As long as it was rushed out so that Lautner could still play the role with Cameos from the Cullens. It's time sensitive because the characters don't age.

I believe any Twilight spin-offs would require Meyer's approved consent.
