A sixth Saw is on the way this fall and it’s safe to say the quality is showing clear signs of diminishing returns. The last one was a gory mess and a little too intricate for its own good. But the box office continues to provide a healthy chunk of change for Lionsgate. The last four have opened to almost identical $30M debuts. What’s next for the franchise?
Tobin Bell, better known as “Jigsaw,” confirmed there are plans for up to eight movies in the series as long as fans remain faithful. In an interview with the best website in horror, Bloody-Disgusting.com, Bell talked about the video game at the E3 convention in Los Angeles. When asked if the eighth film was being written as the final film, Bell said, “Yeah. I look forward to filling out the other pieces of the puzzle. There’s some pieces that people still haven’t seen.” He warned that “final is a relative word” and nothing is ever set in stone until they see how the last one did in theaters.
Saw VI is already on the way in the usual late October schedule. As usual the producers are promising “more violence, better traps” for stories that are entirely reliant on those two things. Shawnee Smith, who played Amanda in Saw II and Saw III, will appear again in this installment. Director Kevin Greutert wrote on his blog the movie is “mind-numblingly complex.”
Last month producer Troy Begnaud said as long as audiences want it, they’ll continue making them. He also said there has been discussions on using 3-D in future Saw films, but no decisions have been made.
