Arquettes Approached for New ‘Scream’ Trilogy

Published by Jeff Leins on: June 3rd, 2009

Almost a year ago, a Showtime press release let it slip that Dimension Films was considering revisiting the horror world of Scream.  Later confirmation came from the studio and Kevin Williamson (the screenwriter for Scream and Scream 2) was hired to pen the new script.  Even Wes Craven is considering a return to direct.  Additionally, it was rumored that a few of the original members were being offered deals to play cameos in the new film.  Perhaps they aren’t just cameo roles anymore…

Entertainment Weekly is reporting Courteney Cox Arquette and David Arquette have been approached to return to the Scream series.  No deals have been signed while scheduling concerns are addressed.  The married couple met while filming the first of the Scream trilogy when Mrs. Arquette played reporter Gale Weathers and Mr. Arquette played Deputy “Dewey” Riley.

Williamson’s plan is possibly another trilogy that restarts the series as a send-up to the horror genre.  I’m hoping the rebooted version will take shots at some of the recent cliches, or maybe set its sights on the “torture porn” sub genre.  Even better, a remake of Scream could be a self-aware almost parody of all the classic horror franchises being redone in Hollywood right now.  Freddy, Halloween, Jason, and more are all being remade.  Now the infamous Scream mask will be back to terrorize teens.
