Ben Stiller Talks Zoolander Sequel

Published by Jeff Leins on: May 19th, 2009

ZoolanderWhile promoting this weekend’s Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian, Ben Stiller fielded questions about the long-rumored sequel to 2001’s Zoolander.

Stiller told Screenrush he’s been “working on a script over the years and hopefully it will happen.”  It doesn’t sound like the sequel is right around the corner, but he did throw out a few possible story details.  The plan is to set the next movie 10 years later and focus on Derek Zoolander’s struggle with the fact that he’s no longer a model.  It would include Derek Jr, now around 10 years old and an “older, wizened” version of the character (Stiller is 43).  He also said the sequel couldn’t be done without Hansel (Owen Wilson).

In December 2008, Stiller said he was trying to get a sequel together and had “seen a few scripts,” but wanted to “make sure it was something new and worthy of it first.”

The film only grossed $45 million domestically, but managed to gather something of a cult following on DVD.  The Alamo Drafthouse here in Austin even ran a few “Quote-Along” screenings of the movie recently.  People seem to really enjoy the movie and I’ll admit it’s one of Stiller’s better comedies.

What do you think?  Are you interested in a Zoolander 2?
