In an interview with MTV, J.J. Abrams discussed possibilities for the inevitable sequel to the newly rebooted Star Trek. While screenwriters Robert Orci and Alex Kurtzman haven’t started the follow-up script, producer/director Abrams is willing to float potential story ideas out there.
“The fun of this [new alternate 'Trek' reality] is that the destiny of these characters is in their hands — it’s not constrained by the pre-existing films or TV series. Believe me, whether it’s William Shatner or Khan … it would be ridiculous to not be open to those ideas.”
The franchise restart currently racking up box office numbers created a diverging, independent timeline for the characters, allowing the new series to continue without upsetting the precious Trekkie canon.
A small role was written for Shatner in the reboot, but the original Kirk declined because he didn’t want to be involved in a cameo. However, he has been extremely vocal about not being included in the new vision of the Trek universe, so perhaps Abrams will appease the 78-year-old actor and the fans who are demanding his return. As for Khaaaaaaaaaan, the iconic villain may also reappear, but with history re-written he may not have the same vengeful temperament as he did in The Wrath of Khan.
I personally would rather see a brand new story rather than a rehash of the favorite sequel, and I could do without the forced inclusion of Shatner a.k.a. Old Kirk. I know I may be in the minority, but I’m hoping for creativity rather than the usual remakes always plaguing theaters. It seems like a waste to start fresh and then voyage into charted space again.
