Update: Production Weekly has released a correction via Twitter clarifying The Rock is not involved with the film. You can all slowly put down the pitchforks and return to your homes.
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson may be working on his third Disney movie in four years. The former professional wrestler has become the darling favorite of the family-friendly studio and, according to this week’s issue of Production Weekly, he has been cast in McG’s 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea remake.
I know what you’re thinking. “What, The Rock as Captain Nemo? That doesn’t even make sense!” You’re probably right too. It makes zero sense. You’re so wise. Hopefully this is either a mistake or The Rock is set to play a supporting character. My guess is he would land the role of Ned Land, the cocky harpooner on Nemo’s ship, the Nautilus. Kirk Douglas played the role in the 1954 version.
Here is the 2k Leagues plot from PW: A fugitive whaler teams up with a naturalist, a mysterious woman and a captain of a futuristic submarine, to search for a lost underwater civilization that holds libraries of vast knowledge and a weapon with the power to destroy mankind. Justin Marks (Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li) wrote the script, so to quote my magic eight ball, “Outlook not so good.” Another Disney classic probably ruined by a Disney remake.
I would expect an official cast announcement soon considering Disney wants to rush this into production sometime this year. McG’s Terminator Salvation is in theaters May 22.
