McG Making Movie Musical

Published by Jeff Leins on: April 14th, 2009

McG is a busy man these days.  The director once known only for subjecting us to dual Charlie’s Angels movies has turned into a powerful player in movies and television.  He’s executive producer of two TV series now, “Supernatural” and the hit comedy “Chuck,” on top of the various film projects in the works.

The director of Terminator Salvation has mentioned his plans already for a fifth installment to the franchise, putting that easily at the top of his priorities if the Halycon Company asks him back.  Disney also hired him to direct the remake of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, a movie he had originally planned to tackle next.

According to THR, McG is also developing a movie adaptation of Spring Awakening, a Tony award-winning Broadway musical set in late 19th century Germany.  The coming-of-age story follows a group of teenagers as they cope with “inner and outer tumult of sexuality.”  The play was originally banned when it was first written in 1891 due to its portrayal of masturbation, abortion, rape, and suicide.  It also includes the topics of homosexuality and S&M, so this one isn’t exactly for the High School Musical crowd.

His musical adventure isn’t set up at a studio yet, though Warner Bros has a first look deal at anything his production company, Wonderland Sound and Vision, comes up with.  I can’t think of a single studio that wouldn’t want to be in the rape/abortion business.  Playwright and lyricist Steven Sater is penning the script, but honestly this sort of material writes itself.  Cue the suicide and jazz hands!
