WB to Retell ‘The NeverEnding Story’

Published by Jeff Leins on February 26, 2009

Warner Bros is partnering with a few “top-tier” production companies, including Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way, to reboot The NeverEnding Story.

The 1984 children’s classic spawned two more chapters before finally ending.  Or so we thought…  The original focused on Bastian Balthazar Bux, a boy who discovers a book with a magical realm inside.  It featured the adventures of Atreyu and his giant “luck dragon,” Falkor (pictured left).

No writer has been officially hired yet, but the trades are reporting the remake will “focus on the more nuanced details of the book” with a “modern spin.”

Like most people my age, I’ve probably seen the first movie about fifty times, and that was all within a few years.  It was a huge part of my childhood and maybe the reason I was into films and reading.  It may even be the reason why you’re reading this right now, or at the very least why I have a little white dog that looks eerily similar to Falkor.

I know most people immediately want to jump to outrage over a remake, but I actually embrace a redo on this one.  It was 25 years ago and its beyond dated.  If a newer version with a “modern spin” can be inspiring to a new generation of kids, why not make another?  Transformers, as lame as it was, didn’t ruin my memories of smashing robot toys together, and neither should this new movie.
