Emily Blunt is Black Widow in Iron Man 2?

The casting for Iron Man 2 continues to be very interesting.  Last week Mickey Rourke and Sam Rockwell entered negotiations to play villains in the sequel.  In the same report, the sexy spy Black Widow was brought up as a possible key character, but no female lead was announced yet.

Variety is reporting Emily Blunt has emerged as the front runner for the femme fatale role, which calls for a skin tight costume and high tech weaponry.  The casting call probably read, “Female needed to embody nerd fantasy.”

According to comic book mythology, the Black Widow is trained by the Russians to seduce American billionaire Tony Stark and later confront his super alter ego Iron Man.  She then defects to the U.S. and is an asset to the superhero team the Avengers.  The script is still being completed by Justin Theroux, so this may not be the angle they’re going with.

Blunt had scene stealing roles in Devil Wears Prada and Charlie Wilson’s War.  Her next high-profile film is The Wolf Man, starring Benicio Del Toro.  She’s pretty.

Filming for Iron Man 2 starts in the spring.
