Wes Craven May Return for ‘Scream 4′

Published by Jeff Leins on January 14, 2009

In July 2008, a Showtime press release touting a deal with the Weinstein Company let it slip that a Scream 4 was in the works.  Buried in a list of future titles, it read re-starting the Scream franchise with Scream 4,”

At the time I couldn’t get anyone to confirm its existence or add any additional details.  But Bloody-Disgusting was with me then and they’re ahead of the game now.  They scored exclusive details on what Dimension Films and the Weinstein Company are planning for the fourth Scream, apparently from a 100% reliable source.  The details are even listed as “Fact #1-4.”

  • Kevin Williamson, who wrote the screenplay for Scream 1-2, is writing a draft that may or may not be used as the shooting script.
  • There is a “very good possibility” that horror legend Wes Craven will return to direct.
  • Financial offers are being made to Courtney Cox Arquette, David Arquette, and Neve Campbell to play cameos.
  • The reason they’ll be barely in the sequel is because “this will be a younger version of the Scream movies.” This brings everything back to the “re-starting” part of the press release.

I know horror fans will whine and complain that you can’t do Scream without anyone from the original cast.  I disagree.  Scream was originally made to poke fun at horror cliches.  It eventually became just another horror franchise (especially with 3).  It’s a great idea to start fresh and maybe take a few shots at the new brands of horror: remakes and “torture porn.”

Why not another Scream?  It can’t be any worse than another Freddy, Jason, or Halloween movie.
