The Dark Knight sold 3 million DVDs across both formats (standard and high-definition) in its first day across the United States, Canada, and the UK. Both formats were available in stores at midnight the morning of Tuesday, December 9.
Nikki Finke has the early numbers following the record-breaking release yesterday by Warner Bros. The 3 million DVDs is easily the best DVD day of 2008, beating the record previously set by Iron Man. It is projected to sell around 7 million by the end of the week. (I’m not sure yet if these figures include rental sales.)
TDK sold 600,000 copies on Blu-ray, the most ever by any title on a single day for the hi-def format. For comparison, Iron Man sold 260,000 on its first day and 500,000 in seven days.
Slashfilm has a great write-up about the different deals and specials available for the DVD, in case you haven’t picked it up yet.
The box office gross for the movie ended at #2 on the domestic charts with $530.5 million. Worldwide it earned $996.5 million, good enough for #4 of all-time. The Dark Knight will return to theaters January 23, 2009. It needs $70 million to pass Titanic and become the biggest movie in U.S. box office history.
