James McAvoy and Emily Blunt have signed to record their voices for Gnomeo and Juliet, a CGI-animated Shakespeare adaptation for Miramax and Elton John’s Rocket Pictures.
The movie is about two gnomes who fall in love from rival gardens. John will provide the music, of course, featuring a few of his favorites and possibly some new songs. I can’t wait to see a pointy hat version of “Tiny Dancer.”
Gnomeo’s original home was with Disney’s animation studio, but when they merged with Pixar John Lasseter dumped it. Maybe he “gnows” something we don’t. See, I can make bad gnome puns too.
At the time (2006), Kate Winslet was attached to voice Juliet, but now she’s a busy lady. Blunt recently replaced her, along with the addition of McAvoy. It’s no surprise Elton John picked British actors for the cast though.
Gnomeo and Juliet is still in storyboard mode, but is expected to be ready for 2010.
