Maybe they would have more depth if you knew what they where saying. And the only real con was the fact that the son in this movie was a waste of time and script pages, as he offered nothing to the characters or story. Just one last thing: is it really trying to be to smart? I call that authnticity, as it's a film about an English professor and his kid that got a perfect score on the sat. If they talked like an everyday sitcom and argued over television then the film would be a waste of time like most every other film out there.
