Jonah Hill to Write ‘21 Jump Street’

Published by Jeff Leins on May 15, 2008

The Apatow disciples are all taking their break out performances and turning them into passion projects. Steve Carell, the original, has gone on to make quite a career for himself (as long as you ignore Evan Almighty). Seth Rogen has taken to getting all his old scripts produced and directed, including this summer’s Pineapple Express. The latest Apatow-ite, Jason Segel (Forgetting Sarah Marshall), is putting together a muppet revival movie.

So I think it goes without saying (especially with that last example) that Jonah Hill, a solid member of the Apatow posse, can do whatever he wants.

What does he do with his new-found fame? He wants to write an updated comedic version of “21 Jump Street.”

What?

Yeah. Variety says he’s writing an adapted screenplay of the 80’s TV series as a potential starring vehicle and will serve as executive producer…

21 Jump Street? Why?

This might be the worst idea since an updated Miami Vice. I guess the new fad is to mine the 80’s TV shows for potential bad ideas. A MacGyver movie is a definite possibility. Knight Rider came and sort of went. The A-Team is unfortunately on its way. Magnum P.I. is bringing back the ’stache. Not to mention the long list of Saturday morning cartoons we’re seeing CGIed into mediocrity.

This idea sucks.
