Audiences Jump 2 the Streets of Spiderwick

Published by Jeff Leins on: February 17th, 2008

With nothing to compete against, four out of the top five at the box office this Valentine’s Day weekend were new openers.

The number one spot went to Jumper, which made $27.2 million over the weekend and $33.8 through the holiday five-day. The sci-fi action movie will also benefit from a Monday off for President’s Day, where Variety projects it to be the fourth largest in history for that holiday.

In a surprise second place finish, the sequel to Step Up, Step Up 2 the Streets, made the same amount of money as its original with $19.7 million over the weekend. Apparently it did well with younger females as much as street dance enthusiasts.

The Spiderwick Chronicles, a family fantasy film, made about $19.1 million, a similar number to last year’s Bridge to Terabithia with the same premise.

Definitely, Maybe went under-appreciated in fifth place with $9.7 million after leading during the middle of the week for the Valentine’s crowd.

The rest of the top ten were holdovers, including Juno and Bucket List in their eleventh and eighth weeks respectively.

Overall it was a pretty uneventful weekend at the box office, with nothing much worth checking out. Other than definitely, maybe Definitely, Maybe.
