Gosling OUT of ‘Lovely Bones,’ Wahlberg IN

Published by Jeff Leins on: October 22nd, 2007

In an 11th hour move by Peter Jackson, Ryan Gosling was replaced by Mark Wahlberg for the lead role in his next film, The Lovely Bones, says Variety.

Ryan Gosling gained 20 pounds and grew a beard for the role of Jack Salmon, the grieving father of the central little girl in the best-selling book and upcoming film. But he backed out of the project Friday, citing the ‘ole “creative differences” line.

This is almost as bad as the overused “irreconcilable differences” thrown around when there’s a real break up. But this one just makes me sad. Gosling was one of the major reasons why I was excited about this movie. Sure, it’s Peter F-in’ Jackson, but until he starts starring in his movies, there needs to be a great actor up front.

Though the replacement is very solid. Mark Wahlberg has proven he can carry a film and while he isn’t as talented as Gosling, is still an excellent choice. He joined the project Sunday after reading the script.

Still in the cast though are some other amazing players. Rachel Weisz, Stanley Tucci, Susan Sarandon, and Michael Imperioli are all still involved with the film.

Filming begins today in Philly where Wahlberg just wrapped with M. Night Shammy on The Happening. At least Mark will have a good movie in 2008 now.

So this is bittersweet news for the movie. Gosling is a rare talent, but Wahlberg continues to surprise me.
